Telecommunications networks are fundamentally different from standard enterprise IT environments. Most commercial vulnerability scanners and penetration testing frameworks have no native understanding of SS7 MAP operations, Diameter AVP encoding, GTP-U tunneling, or the HTTP/2 and JSON-based Service Based Architecture (SBA) of 5G. Running a generic NMAP scan against a GSMA IPX hub or a 5G AMF service endpoint will produce no meaningful results — and may trigger alerting on the operator's signaling monitoring systems.
